I Want To Be A Good Man
Six Crucial Steps
We’re going to look at some scriptures today that can have a deep meaning in our lives—if we’re willing to open our hearts and let God’s Word truly take root in us when we say, “I want to be a good man.
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delighteth in his way.”
Psalm 37:23
That verse speaks volumes. I think many of us can say, honestly and earnestly, “I want to be a good man.” Or, “I want to be a good woman.” That desire is where the journey begins. And scripture tells us that when we choose to be that kind of person—good in the eyes of the Lord—He directs our steps.
I Want To Be A Good Man
Planning vs. Being Directed
We often make plans for our day.
“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.”
Proverbs 16:9
We choose where to go, what to do, and how to get there. But as believers, we know that our steps—those very actions—are directed by God. That’s a powerful thought. You can make a plan, but God’s direction is what leads to purpose. As we follow Him, we’re placed in the right spots, having conversations with the right people, and doing what He has called us to do—sometimes without even realizing it.
It’s comforting to know that as we go about our day, we aren’t alone. God is directing us. He’s working behind the scenes, lining things up for His glory and our growth.
Life Before and After Christ
Before coming to Christ, our steps are uncertain. We may still be on a journey, but it’s often full of confusion, hardship, and wandering.
“O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.”
Jeremiah 10:23
Without God, we simply don’t have the capacity to guide ourselves correctly. That’s why so many are walking through life unsure, afraid, or lost. But once we begin walking with God, we can navigate this world with confidence—not because we know everything, but because we know Who is leading us.
In Him We Live
The Apostle Paul said…
“For in Him we live, and move, and have our being.”
Acts 17:28
That can be unsettling to some because human nature wants control. We want to direct our own lives. But the life of a believer requires surrender—daily letting go of our plans and allowing God to step in. It’s not a weakness; it’s strength. It’s faith.
Staying on the Right Path
We don’t want to end up walking the paths of those who ignore God’s guidance.
“That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.”
Proverbs 2:20
This path might be narrow. It might not be the easiest one. But it’s the one that leads to life. The path of righteousness isn’t always the most popular, and it might not be filled with shortcuts. But it’s tried. It’s tested. And it’s trusted by those who’ve gone before us.
Let’s not wander off that path looking for something quicker or easier. We might think we’re saving time or effort, but often we run into obstacles—dry valleys, thorns, detours that weren’t necessary. Why hack through the wilderness when there’s a clear path already set by God?
The Power of Community
One of the greatest gifts we have is the church. Not just a building—but a body of believers walking the path together. When we walk with others who are following Christ, we find support, direction, encouragement, and wisdom.
It’s one thing to hear advice from afar—through a screen or a sermon—but it’s another to walk beside someone who knows your struggles and can pray with you on the spot. That’s the beauty of church: real-time fellowship. Shared wisdom. Collective strength.
When life gets hard, when obstacles appear, we need each other. We’re stronger together.
Don’t Follow the Crowd
Be cautious about choosing the “easy” path.
“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.”
Matthew 7:13
Just because a path is popular doesn’t make it right. Just because everyone is doing it doesn’t mean it leads to life. Don’t blindly follow the crowd. Instead, follow Christ—and walk the path of good men and women who’ve trusted Him before you.
Final Thoughts
If we want to be good men and good women—if we want to live lives that count—we have to walk God’s path. We have to surrender our own control and trust in His direction. We need each other, and we need Him even more.
Let’s walk in the way of good men. Let’s stay on the path of righteousness. And let’s do it together.
